A Moment in the Game

A gaming clip is the fundamental unit of shareable content in the video game world. Thanks to built-in recording software on modern consoles (like the PlayStation’s Share button) and PCs, players can easily capture and share short snippets of their gameplay. A clip can document any kind of moment: a funny bug or glitch, an incredible display of skill, a frustrating failure, a beautiful in-game landscape, or a dramatic cutscene.

These clips are the lifeblood of gaming-related social media, populating feeds on TikTok, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter). They allow players to share their personal experiences and contribute to the wider conversation and culture surrounding a game.

Machinima and Cinematic Storytelling

Beyond simple sharing, gaming clips are the raw material for a unique form of filmmaking known as machinima. This is the art of using the real-time graphics engines of video games to create animated films. Creators will use a game as a virtual movie set, “directing” the in-game characters and using recording software to capture the scenes. These clips are then edited together, with added voice-over and sound effects, to tell an original story. The long-running and hugely popular web series Red vs. Blue, created using the game engine from the Halo series, is the most famous example of this innovative, fan-driven filmmaking technique.
