The term “vidding” is a portmanteau of “video” and “fandom,” and the resulting works are known as “vids.” Unlike a simple supercut or fan-made trailer, vidding is widely considered a form of transformative critique. Vidders (the creators of vids) meticulously select and edit footage from one or more media sources, setting it to a piece of music to build a new, coherent argument. By juxtaposing specific clips, playing with chronology, and leveraging the chosen song’s lyrics and mood, a vidder can analyze a character’s internal journey, deconstruct a film’s political themes, or highlight a subtextual relationship that was not explicit in the original work.
The practice has a rich history that predates the digital age. It is often traced back to 1975, when Kandy Fong showcased a slideshow of Star Trek stills set to music. She soon progressed to using two VCRs to edit clips from the show, physically creating and screening her vids at fan conventions. This origin underscores vidding’s deep roots in a communal, shared fan experience, where vids were presented and discussed as a form of academic analysis within the fan community.
Vidding vs. AMVs
Vidding shares its core methodology with Anime Music Videos (AMVs), as both involve editing video clips to music. However, the two practices evolved in distinct, parallel fan cultures.
- Source Material: Vidding almost exclusively uses live-action films and television series, whereas AMVs use Japanese animation.
- Cultural Context: Vidding emerged from predominantly female-led Western media fandoms. Historically, it has carried a stronger tradition of being framed as a critical, academic, and often political practice. The community places a strong emphasis on the vid as a visual essay or argument.
- Stylistic Focus: While both require technical skill, AMV culture often places a greater emphasis on dynamic, effects-heavy, and rhythmically complex editing. Vidding, while also technically complex, often prioritizes narrative clarity and thematic resonance, using editing to support its central thesis.
The Language and Purpose of Vids
Vids are a powerful tool for exploring the unspoken depths of a film or series. One of their most significant functions has been the exploration of subtext, particularly queer subtext. In an era where explicit LGBTQ+ representation was scarce, vidders could isolate glances, gestures, and charged moments between characters to create a compelling visual argument for a non-canon queer relationship (a practice known as “shipping”). Vids can also function as deep-dive character studies, tracing a character’s emotional arc in a way that provides new and profound insight. The choice of music is paramount; the song is not merely a backing track but a critical lens through which the visual source material is re-interpreted.
