Definition and Purpose

Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the industry-standard container format for delivering motion pictures in digital cinemas. Establishing uniformity across projection systems, DCP encapsulates compressed video, multi-channel audio, subtitles, and metadata into a structured file tree. A typical feature-length DCP comprises:

  • MXF (Material eXchange Format) files for video and audio essence
  • ASSETMAP and PKL (Packing List) XML documents for organizational metadata
  • CPL (Composition Playlist) XML describing timeline and reel order
  • Volumetric subtitles in SUP format

This standard, managed by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) since 2005, ensures compatibility and reliable playback across diverse hardware setups.

Technical Specifications and Workflow

DCP video essence is encoded in JPEG 2000, supporting resolutions up to 4K (4096×2160) and frame rates up to 60 fps. Audio is typically 24-bit/48 kHz PCM, supporting up to 16 discrete channels (e.g., 7.1 surround). Color is encoded in XYZ color space to maintain consistent gamut across projectors. The creation process involves:

  1. Encoding: Transcoding editorial master files into JPEG 2000 frames with approved DCI bitrates.
  2. Packaging: Organizing essences and metadata into the DCP folder structure.
  3. Quality Control: Running automated and manual tests, including checksum verification and digital cinema server ingest checks.
  4. Delivery: Transferring via hard drives, satellite, or secure online portals to theaters.

Because DCPs are encrypted for security, theatres use Key Delivery Messages (KDMs) to authorize playback for specific dates and auditoriums. This system protects against piracy while streamlining release logistics.
