DCP

A Digital Cinema Package or DCP is the global standard for the collection of digital files used to store and convey digital cinema content for theatrical exhibition.

A Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the digital equivalent of a 35mm film reel. In the era of digital projection, it is the universal format used by distributors to send films to commercial movie theaters worldwide. A common misconception is that a DCP is a single video file, like an MP4 or MOV. In reality, it is a highly structured folder containing a set of separate files for picture, sound, subtitles, and playback instructions. This component-based structure is robust, secure, and offers immense flexibility for distributors who need to create multiple versions of a film—for example, with different languages or subtitle tracks—without re-rendering the entire movie.

The entire system is governed by a strict set of standards set by Digital Cinema Initiatives, LLC (DCI), a joint venture of the major Hollywood studios. This DCI specification ensures that a properly created DCP will play flawlessly on any DCI-compliant projection system in any theater on the planet, from a small independent cinema to the largest multiplex.

Anatomy of a DCP

A DCP folder contains several key components, each wrapped in a specific file format called MXF (Material Exchange Format) and governed by XML-based playlists:

  • Picture Track: The film’s images are not stored as a video but as a sequence of individual frames, much like a physical film strip. Each frame is a JPEG 2000 file, which uses a visually lossless compression that preserves immense detail and color fidelity suitable for a giant screen.
  • Sound Track: Audio is stored as uncompressed, 24-bit Broadcast Wave (.wav) files, ensuring the highest possible sound quality. A DCP can support numerous audio configurations, from standard 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound to advanced object-based immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos.
  • Composition Playlist (CPL): This is an XML file that acts as the film’s master instruction manual. It tells the projection server the exact order in which to play the picture, sound, and subtitle files. This allows for seamless versioning; a distributor can use the same picture track but create separate CPLs that point to different audio or subtitle files for different countries.
  • Packing List (PKL): This is another XML file that serves as a manifest, listing every single asset contained within the DCP. It includes checksum hashes for each file, allowing the theater’s server to verify that the package has not been corrupted or tampered with during transit.

Encryption and Distribution

Security is a paramount concern for film distributors. To prevent piracy, most commercial DCPs are encrypted. In order to play the film, the theater needs a Key Delivery Message (KDM). A KDM is a very small, separate file that is generated specifically for one projection server and is valid only for a limited time window (e.g., from the film’s release date for two weeks). This powerful system gives distributors precise control over who can play their film, where, and when. Distribution of DCPs happens either physically—shipped to theaters on specialized, ruggedized hard drives—or digitally via secure satellite or terrestrial broadband networks.
