Camera Tracking

System that measures a camera’s position, rotation, and lens state so virtual scenes align with live action.


Overview

Camera tracking (a.k.a. camera solving when done in post) supplies six-degree-of-freedom pose plus lens data (focal length, focus, iris, distortion) to engines or compositors. On LED stages it enables frustum-locked backgrounds; in VFX it anchors CG to plates.

On-Set Systems

Optical (marker-based), inside-out (SLAM/LiDAR), and mechanical encoders (on dollies, cranes) each trade accuracy, occlusion resilience, and setup time. Hybrid rigs combine methods—optical for absolute position, encoders for smooth motion. Lens mapping translates focus/zoom to nodal offsets and distortion profiles, vital for close-up parallax fidelity.

Workflow Integration

Tracking data flows through standardized protocols to real-time engines; timecode and genlock keep it synchronized. DITs and stage ops monitor latency and drift; witness cameras record reference for post. Changes to lens or matte box must be logged—shade flags can occlude markers and break solves.

Post-Production Complement

When in-camera results need refinement, matchmove artists extend or replace solves using survey data and photogrammetry. Clean plates, tracking markers, and consistent shutter speeds increase success rates.

Troubleshooting

  • Reflections and specular props confuse optical systems—add non-reflective markers.
  • Vibrations introduce micro-jitter—use isolation and smoothing filters judiciously.
  • Zoom rockers that lack repeatability produce lens map drift—calibrate daily.
