Node Graph

The Node Graph is a flowchart-style interface used in advanced color grading software where each step of the image processing pipeline is represented by an individual 'node' that can be connected in complex, non-linear ways.


The Blueprint of a Color Grade

The Node Graph is the powerful and flexible workflow paradigm at the heart of color grading software like DaVinci Resolve. Unlike a traditional layer-based system (like Adobe Photoshop) where adjustments are stacked vertically on top of each other, a node-based workflow visualizes the image processing path as a logical, horizontal flowchart. Each ‘node’ is a self-contained container for a specific grading operation, and the way these nodes are connected—the ‘node tree’—determines the precise order and interaction of those operations.

Understanding the Signal Flow

The fundamental concept is signal flow. The original, ungraded image enters the graph from a green input on the left and flows through the connections to a final green output on the right. Every node placed in this path alters the signal before passing it along to the next one. This structure provides immense control and clarity.

Key Types of Nodes

While the concept is simple, the power lies in the different types of nodes and how they can be combined:

  • Serial Node: This is the most basic node. It is added in series, with each new node receiving the output of the one before it. A simple grade might consist of a series of nodes: one for primary balance, one for a skin tone secondary, and one for a vignette.
  • Parallel Node: This node splits the input signal into two separate, parallel branches. A colorist can perform different operations on each branch, and the results are then merged back together. This is useful for making multiple secondary corrections (e.g., one for the sky, one for the grass) that are all derived from the same clean source image, preventing the corrections from interfering with each other.
  • Layer Node: This node mixes multiple inputs in a way similar to layers in Photoshop. It can be used to stack corrections on top of each other with different composite modes (like Add, Screen, or Overlay), allowing for sophisticated image blends and keying operations.
  • Outside Node: This is a powerful utility node. When a colorist makes a selection inside a node (e.g., isolating a face with a Power Window), the Outside Node provides an inverted matte of that selection. This allows the colorist to grade the isolated face in one node and then, in the Outside Node, grade everything else in the image except the face.

This modular approach allows colorists to build complex, highly organized grades that can be easily understood, modified, and debugged. It is a system designed for precision, flexibility, and control.
