Look Metadata

Metadata that encodes a camera’s color‑grading decisions and creative intent for downstream workflows.

Overview

Look Metadata comprises the descriptive and instructional data attached to camera footage, detailing color corrections, exposure adjustments, and stylistic decisions made on set. It allows DITs (Digital Imaging Technicians), colorists, and VFX artists to understand the cinematographer’s creative intent and maintain consistency throughout postproduction.

Types and Standards

  • CDL (Color Decision List): A standardized format storing basic color parameters (lift, gamma, gain, saturation).
  • ASC‑CDL: The Academy’s specification of CDL with rigid parameter definitions and interchange guidelines.
  • Custom LUT Metadata: Proprietary lookup tables embedded alongside or within file wrappers (e.g., in MXF or DPX headers).

Workflow Integration

  1. On‑Set Grading: The DIT applies primary color tweaks to log footage and exports a CDL alongside proxies.
  2. Metadata Injection: Look Metadata is written into sidecar files or directly into camera clips when format allows.
  3. Postproduction: Colorists import metadata into grading suites (DaVinci Resolve, Baselight), using it as a starting point for final grade.

Importance

Consistent application of Look Metadata ensures editorial and VFX teams see footage as the DP intended, reducing guesswork and rework. It also provides an audit trail of creative decisions for archival and client review.
