Camera Projection

Camera projection is a visual effects technique that projects a 2D image onto simple 3D geometry to create the illusion of a three-dimensional scene.


Creating 3D from 2D

Camera Projection, also known as Camera Mapping or Matte Painting Projection, is a powerful and efficient technique used in visual effects to create complex and realistic digital environments. Instead of building an entire city or landscape as a highly detailed and polygon-heavy 3D model, this technique allows artists to use a single 2D image as the foundation for a 3D shot.

The Projection Process

The workflow involves several key steps:

  1. The Matte Painting: An artist creates a detailed 2D image of the desired environment. This can be a digital painting, a photograph, or a composite of multiple images.
  2. Simple Geometry: A 3D artist then builds a very simple, low-detail geometric model that roughly matches the major shapes and planes of the 2D image (e.g., cubes for buildings, planes for the ground and walls).
  3. The Projection: The 2D matte painting is then ‘projected’ onto this simple geometry from the perspective of a virtual camera, much like a slide projector shining an image onto a lumpy wall. The 2D image effectively becomes the texture for the 3D shapes.
  4. The Camera Move: When a new virtual camera is created and moved slightly, it creates a convincing illusion of depth and parallax. The different planes of the geometry move against each other, making the static 2D image feel like a real, three-dimensional space.

This technique is widely used for creating digital set extensions and establishing shots. It is far more efficient than full 3D modeling and allows for the creation of incredibly detailed environments that can withstand subtle camera movements.
