On a film set, the term “Early Bird” primarily refers to a small, mobile Early Bird generator. This generator is a crucial piece of equipment used by the grip and electric departments to provide essential power in the very early hours of the morning, often before the main, high-capacity production generator has arrived or been started. It gets its name from its function: providing power for the “early birds” on the crew who are the first to arrive on location.

The Logistics of a Film Set Morning

The filmmaking day starts long before the director and actors arrive. The first crew on location are typically from the locations department, followed closely by electricians and grips. This initial crew needs power to begin their “pre-rigging” work, which includes setting up lights, running cables, and preparing equipment. They also need power for more basic necessities like work lights (in the pre-dawn darkness) and, most importantly, the coffee maker. The main production generator—a massive, ultra-quiet unit often towed on its own truck—is often not fired up until closer to the main crew call, as it consumes a large amount of fuel. The Early Bird bridges this power gap efficiently.

Technical and Cultural Aspects

Technically, an Early Bird generator is much smaller and more like a standard commercial or construction generator. It is significantly louder than the main “movie quiet” generator, and as a result, it is always shut down before any sound recording begins for a take.

Culturally, the term has also evolved into a piece of general set slang. An “early bird” can also refer to any crew member who is the first to arrive on set, mirroring the name of the equipment that supports their initial work. It’s a term that speaks to the layered, logistical, and often grueling schedule of professional film production.
