Among them are Asuna and her school friend Mito Misumi Tozawa, who discover they are effectively trapped inside Aincrad, a towering, deadly castle that spans a hundred floors. Asuna, who has some beta experience, learns quickly and forms a rough alliance with Mito, who shares her knowledge to help them survive. As the two navigate the perilous early terrain, they build a working partnership and begin to level up by taking on monsters that lurk beyond the town’s walls. A dangerous plant‑based predator, the nepenthes, becomes a crucial test of their skills: Mito warns that striking it with a ball overhead would trigger a smoke assault from surrounding flora, a warning that proves all too true when Asuna inadvertently triggers a cluster of attacks after Mito leaves to pursue a rarer target.

The crisis deepens as Mito, unable to reach Asuna in time, is driven off a precipice while the nepenthes descend toward Asuna. With Mito gone and Asuna’s health dwindling, a lone savior arrives: Kirito, who eliminates a deadly foe and offers healing potions and a map back to the nearest town before vanishing again into the shadows. By the morning of November 27, 2022, Asuna wakes in a lodge room with a stubborn resolve: if she must die in this brutal new world, she will choose her own exit. She buys a cloak and spends several days battling through a cavern, sharpening her skills and growing more confident. Kirito reappears, urging her to head to town to recover before she is wiped out, but she resists, collapsing from exhaustion only to be carried out by Kirito himself. He invites her to join him for a group meeting in town to plan for the first floor boss’s defeat.

In the town, the gathering is led by the strategic-minded Diabel, who sketches out plans to split into multiple parties and coordinate a coordinated assault on the floor’s boss, Illfang the Kobold Lord, the next day. Asuna notices that Mito is present, but the rift between them remains because Mito had left her to face danger alone. That night, Kirito lends Asuna a new sword, and the pair practice together, sharing stories about beta testers, fear, and the choices they’ve made when faced with impossible odds. Kirito explains that trauma and fear don’t define a person’s future, offering a sense of understanding that eases Asuna’s worries about past betrayals.

The following day, the assembled group—including Kirito, Asuna, Mito, and Diabel—march to the boss chamber to confront Illfang and his sentinels. When Illfang’s health nears collapse, Diabel makes a final attempt to finish the fight but is struck down, mortally wounded by the boss’s relentless onslaught. In his last breath, Diabel urges Kirito to seize the opportunity and save the others, a plea that Kirito answers by guiding Asuna and Mito’s efforts to victory. Kirito defeats Illfang and earns the prize: a distinctive black leather trench coat, symbolizing his status as the first player to clear the first floor by stepping through the gate. Yet the crowd quickly labels him a “beater”—a portmanteau of beta-tester and cheater—for possessing foreknowledge that he kept to himself, a stigma he accepts while taking the triumph.

In the wake of the victory, Mito approaches Asuna to apologize for abandoning her earlier, proposing they form a new party together. Asuna, however, has found a path of her own with Kirito and declines, deciding to pursue her journey alongside him on the next floor. The two walk away from the crowd, formally exchanging names as they set their sights on the second floor teleporter. Behind the floor gate, a cloaked girl watches with an obvious eagerness to see the two strongest players unite, hinting at future challenges and alliances in this perilous, endlessly unfolding game.
