Nobuyuki Hiyama was born on 25 August 1967 in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima, Japan, at the Red Cross Hospital and grew up amid the post‑war cultural shifts that shaped his early imagination. His mother, a Japanese‑Taiwanese born during the final days of World War II, returned to Japan after the conflict, while his father’s enthusiasm for history and social studies inspired Hiyama’s own academic interests during middle school. Though initially resistant to extracurricular activities, he drifted through clubs such as Go, Shogi, and a brief stint in his school’s radio club, which he later described as “awful” and “boring”. The turning point arrived in high school when, at a classmate’s urging, he rejoined a radio club and discovered a passion for planning broadcasts and producing radio dramas. This experience, coupled with the burgeoning voice‑acting boom of the 1970s‑80s, sparked his ambition to pursue a career in voice work. Despite parental opposition and financial constraints, Hiyama secured a scholarship from Japan’s Newspaper Scholarship grant, enrolled in Tokyo Announce Gakuin’s Broadcasting Voice Actor program, and endured a grueling daily schedule of part‑time newspaper delivery and intensive training. After graduation he continued honing his craft under Arts Vision’s narration research center, eventually debuting as a mummy in the 1989 OVA Kaiketsu Zorori.
