What Is One Foot Under About?

The premise of One Foot Under in 282 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the crisp, often gray streets of Helsinki, the city’s gardens bloom under the quiet stewardship of Visa Vuorio, a 35‑year‑old team leader whose work is as methodical as the seasons he tends. His days are marked by the steady rhythm of municipal routines, the whispered conversations of coworkers, and the simple pleasure of watching a seedling push through the soil. The film captures this understated world with a palette of muted blues and greens, allowing the everyday beauty of the capital to feel both familiar and slightly melancholy.

A sudden, devastating diagnosis shatters Visa’s orderly existence, revealing that he has only a few months left to live. Confronted with the stark reality of his own mortality, he seeks refuge in a therapeutic support group for those facing terminal illness, where strangers share raw vulnerability beneath the gentle hum of a Helsinki café. The collective offers a fragile sanctuary, a place where hope and resignation coexist, and where the quiet dignity of ordinary people becomes a quiet source of strength.

Into this delicate balance steps Hanna Manninen, a young reporter whose curiosity is matched only by her empathy. She arrives at the support group with an offer to document Visa’s story, proposing a series of articles that could illuminate the inner life of a man suddenly aware of his limited time. Their interaction sparks a subtle tension: Visa must decide how much of his private struggle to reveal, while Hanna wrestles with the ethics of turning personal grief into public narrative. The film moves with a contemplative pace, allowing their tentative connection to linger in the spaces between words, and inviting the audience to ponder the fragile line between observation and participation.

Spoilers ahead

Visa Vuorio, a 35-year-old team leader at the Helsinki city gardening department, is suffering from a terminal neurological disease and has only a few months to live. Because of this, he joins a therapeutical support group for people with terminal illnesses. His life takes a dramatic turn when a young female reporter, Hanna Manninen, arrives at the group offering to write a series of articles about his life.

During a routine consultation, Visa learns there was a mix-up of samples and that, in fact, he is perfectly healthy. He chooses not to share this news with either Hanna or his girlfriend, Riia, because he wants to spare them the shock and also not lose the chance to have his life story chronicled. He only confides in his best friend, Harri, who, unbeknownst to him, is secretly in love with Riia.

Visa and Hanna travel to Copenhagen together, and there they fall in love, though neither dares to admit it to the other. Back in Helsinki, the support group throws a grand party, and Visa is invited to speak. On stage, he reveals that he is perfectly healthy and finally confesses his love for Hanna. Hanna, overwhelmed, turns him down. Hanna’s ex-boyfriend Ilkka then pursues a renewed relationship with her, proposing in a restaurant in Porvoo. Desperate to thwart this, Visa makes a dramatic move, only to realize at the restaurant door that he is sick after all and collapses on the street.

He is taken to a hospital in Helsinki, but seizes the first chance to escape and crashes Hanna’s and Ilkka’s wedding in order to reveal his illness once more and to declare his love for Hanna. He shares a kiss with Hanna, and almost immediately afterward, collapses and dies on the ground.

Themes

What Are the Themes of One Foot Under?

3 ideas the story keeps returning to, among them Romance, Truth and Facade.

  1. 01

    Romance

Visa and Hanna's bond develops during their journey to Copenhagen, offering a fragile beacon of hope amid looming illness. Their interactions are braided with unspoken feelings and the desire for genuine connection. The posturing of illness and the fear of vulnerability add tension to their budding romance. The film uses their relationship to explore how love can bloom under extraordinary circumstances, even when the truth remains partly hidden.

  2. 02

    Truth

Deception becomes the engine of the plot after a hospital mix-up reveals Visa is healthy. He decides not to tell Hanna or Riia to preserve the experience of being cared for as someone fragile. The moment of truth arrives in staged moments—a hospital escape, a wedding confrontation—forcing choices between honesty and protection. The theme probes the ethics of truth-telling and its consequences on trust and relationships.

  3. 03

    Facade

Appearances mask deeper realities as Visa plays the role of a gravely ill man to sustain the narrative of his life. The support group and public attention turn identity into performance, with friends and lovers reacting to the story projected onto him. As the truth surfaces, characters confront what they want to believe versus what is true. The film uses this facade to question how much of a life is crafted for others and how much is sincerely felt.
