In the North African desert, seasoned Sergeant Kelly leads a British patrol, joined by Corporal Colin Spence, a quiet, unassuming Canadian. Later, Kelly leads the six survivors on a raid against an Italian armored car, but he is seriously wounded. He orders Spence to leave him behind; when Spence refuses to obey, he shoots himself.

Spence, with the remaining three men, heads toward an oasis. Before they can reach safety, a transport plane lands and disgorges German soldiers who set up a base.
