In the North African desert, seasoned Sergeant Kelly leads a British patrol, joined by Corporal Colin Spence, a quiet, unassuming Canadian. When Italian aircraft strike, they manage to shoot one down, but it crashes onto one of their vehicles, killing eight men. The toll weighs heavy as they press on.
Later, Kelly leads the six survivors on a raid against an Italian armored car, but he is seriously wounded. He orders Spence to leave him behind; when Spence refuses to obey, he shoots himself.
