A year later, Don Martín dies, and Felicitas—now 26 and well-off—finds herself courted by several suitors. Among them is Samuel Sáenz Valiente, a neighboring young man she met on a stormy night when he helped with her stalled cart, Michel Noher.

Amid this turn of events, Enrique returns from the war, seeking Felicitas again. Discovering her budding engagement to Samuel, jealousy takes over. He corners her in the study of her late husband, proposes they run away to a distant place, and the scene ends with Felicitas declining his offer. He later confronts her again and forcibly carries her away.

Shortly after, Felicitas’s cousin Manuela, Antonella Costa, and her mother Felisa Guerrero, Ana Celentano, arrive asking about her whereabouts.
