What Is Evilenko About?
The premise of Evilenko in 256 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In the waning shadows of a crumbling empire, a city clings to the remnants of a once‑dominant ideology while the streets whisper of uncertainty and decay. The atmosphere is heavy with a sense of loss, where old symbols of power linger like ghostly monuments and the populace drifts between nostalgia and disillusionment. Against this backdrop, a solitary figure moves with unsettling poise, embodying a ferocious devotion to a cause that has been twisted into a personal crusade.
Evilenko, a former educator whose mind is as sharp as it is fractured, channels his rage over the Soviet Union’s slow disintegration into an obsessive, ideological mission. He operates with an eerie confidence, always appearing a step ahead of those who seek to stop him, as if guided by an unseen current that bends reality itself. His presence is both charismatic and chilling, leaving a trail of unanswered questions that seep into the city’s collective consciousness.
Tasked with unravelling the mystery, the relentless Lesiev—a magistrate burdened by family responsibilities yet driven by a consuming need for justice—teams up with the analytical Richter, a psychiatric profiler whose insight into the human psyche offers a fragile lens through which to view the enigma. Their partnership is a study in contrast: the procedural rigor of law meeting the nuanced, almost intuitive grasp of a mind that delves into darkness. Together, they navigate a world where ideology, madness, and the remnants of a fading regime intersect, setting the stage for a tense cat‑and‑mouse game that hangs in the balance of belief and obsession.

In 1984, in Kyiv, a schoolteacher Andrej Romanovich Evilenko, Malcolm McDowell, is dismissed from his position after attempting to rape a pupil. Driven by his psychopathic urges and embittered by the collapse of the Soviet Union, Evilenko begins a chilling pattern of rape, murder, and cannibalise—cannibalism of women and children. The film hints that Evilenko somehow gained the power to hypnotise his victims, which accounts for their lack of resistance and his continuous evasion of the authorities.
Magistrate Vadim Timurouvic Lesiev, Marton Csokas, is assigned to bring the killer to justice. For years, Evilenko eludes Lesiev and psychiatrist Aron Richter, Ronald Pickup, who is tasked with profiling the killer. Richter eventually finds Evilenko with a little girl and manages to break Evilenko’s hypnotic hold on her, but is killed by Evilenko in retaliation; although it appears to Evilenko that she is run over by a train, the girl escapes alive.
Almost two years later, Lesiev finally captures Evilenko, who by now has killed 55 people, mostly children and young women. On 22 May 1992, Evilenko goes to court, and on 14 February 1994, he is finally executed. Before his execution, two governments expressed interest in Evilenko’s psychic abilities and asked for extradition of Evilenko but were denied.
