Teruyuki Kagawa, born December 7, 1965 in Tokyo, Japan, emerged from one of the most prestigious kabuki lineages in the country, a heritage that traces back to the legendary Ichikawa Danshirō II and includes figures such as his father Ichikawa Ennosuke III and his uncle Ichikawa Danshirō IV. Despite being raised by his mother, actress Yūko Hama, after a 1968 divorce, he grew up believing kabuki was “something that must not be watched,” only to later reconnect with the art form after a long estrangement. After earning a degree in social psychology from the University of Tokyo, Kagawa launched his screen career in 1989, quickly distinguishing himself with intense, nuanced performances that earned him multiple nominations for the Japan Academy Prize, including for Warau Iemon and Kita no zeronen, and a win for Best Supporting Actor for Mt. Tsurugidake at the 33rd ceremony.
