Sanjay Gupta is an American neurosurgeon, acclaimed medical reporter and prolific writer who has become a household name through his work with CNN and numerous public‑health initiatives. Born on October 23, 1969 in Novi, Michigan to Indian immigrant parents, he pursued an accelerated medical education at the University of Michigan, earning both a B.S. in biomedical sciences and an M.D. in 1993 through the innovative Inteflex program. After completing his neurosurgery residency and a fellowship at the Semmes Murphy Clinic, Gupta joined Emory Healthcare as an associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he has performed spine, trauma and cutting‑edge 3‑D‑image‑guided operations. His clinical expertise was complemented by a distinguished stint as a White House Fellow (1997‑1998), during which he advised then‑First Lady Hillary Clinton on health policy. In 2001 Gupta entered broadcast journalism, becoming CNN’s chief medical correspondent and quickly gaining recognition for on‑the‑ground reporting from events such as the September 11 attacks, the 2003 Iraq invasion, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, where he also performed emergency neurosurgery aboard the USS Carl Vinson.
