Purnell Pratt (October 20, 1885 – July 25, 1941) was an American character actor whose career spanned the silent and early sound eras of Hollywood. Born in Bethel, Illinois, he grew up in a modest Midwestern family and later attended the University of Pennsylvania with the ambition of performing in opera, but financial constraints and a loss of hearing forced him to abandon that path. Instead, he joined the chorus of a George M. Cohan production, spending a decade touring with Cohan’s troupes and honing his stagecraft. During World War I he served in the United States military and spent more than a year in France, an experience that broadened his worldview and added a disciplined presence to his later screen roles. Pratt made his film debut in 1914 with The Great Diamond Robbery and quickly became known for portraying authoritative figures such as police detectives, district attorneys, judges, and military officers. Over the next twenty‑seven years he appeared in more than 110 films, including notable titles like Scarface (1932) where he played publisher Garston, Grand Hotel (1932) as Zinnowitz, and The Public Enemy (1931) as Officer Powers (uncredited). His versatility allowed him to transition smoothly from silent pictures to talkies, and he frequently provided the stern, reliable foil that anchored crime dramas and melodramas of the era. In the mid‑1930s he took on memorable parts in The Casino Murder Case (1935) as District Attorney John Markham and A Night at the Opera (1935) as the Mayor, further cementing his reputation as a reliable supporting actor. Pratt continued to work steadily until his death in Hollywood, California, on July 25, 1941, leaving behind a legacy of over a hundred films that illustrate the evolution of American cinema from its early days to the Golden Age.
