Michiko Kuwano was born on January 4, 1915, in the former municipality of Shiba ward, which is now part of Minato ward in Tokyo, Japan. Her father worked as a chef, and tragically, her mother passed away when Michiko was just four years old, leaving a profound impact on her early childhood. After completing her education at Mita High School in 1932, she initially pursued a career outside the entertainment industry, working as a sweets girl for Morinaga & Company, a confectionery manufacturer. However, her destiny would soon change when she entered the prestigious Shochiku film studios in 1934, marking the beginning of what would become a remarkable but tragically short career in Japanese cinema. She made her silver screen debut in Hiroshi Shimizu's Eclipse, a film that would establish the beginning of a significant collaborative relationship with the renowned director.

Throughout her twelve-year career from 1934 to 1946, Kuwano appeared in nearly ninety films for Shōchiku, establishing herself as one of the studio's most prolific and versatile actresses during the golden age of Japanese cinema. She developed particularly notable working relationships with several master filmmakers of the era, including Hiroshi Shimizu, with whom she collaborated on multiple projects including the celebrated Mr. Thank You in 1936, as well as Yasujirō Ozu and Yasujirō Shimazu, appearing in works such as What Did the Lady Forget? (1937), A Brother and His Younger Sister (1939), and The Legend of Tank Commander Nishizumi (1940). In 1942, she gave birth to her daughter Miyuki Kuwano, who would later follow in her mother's footsteps to become an actress herself. Her final screen appearance came in Kenji Mizoguchi's Victory of Women (1946), a film that would become forever associated with her tragic end, as she collapsed on set during filming. Michiko Kuwano passed away on April 1, 1946, at the tragically young age of 31 from complications arising from a hemorrhage caused by an ectopic pregnancy, cutting short a brilliant career that had already left an indelible mark on Japanese film history.
