Marc Preston Webb (born August 31, 1974) is an American filmmaker and music‑video director best known for his versatile transition from short‑form visuals to high‑budget studio features. Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin after his family moved from Bloomington, Indiana, Webb graduated from Madison West High School and later earned an English degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, after a stint at Colorado College. He began his career editing before self‑funding his first music video for The Shame Idols, a 16 mm superhero‑themed piece that never reached public view. Between 1999 and 2009 he built a robust reputation directing videos for acts such as Good Charlotte, Evanescence, AFI, Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Snow Patrol, showcasing a flair for narrative storytelling within the three‑minute format. Webb’s feature‑film breakthrough arrived with the 2009 romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon‑Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, a film praised for its inventive structure and heartfelt tone. His success opened the door to the superhero arena, where he helmed The Amazing Spider‑Man (2012) and its sequel (2014), introducing a tonal shift that later inspired the fan‑coined “Webb‑Verse” within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the years that followed he returned to drama with Gifted and The Only Living Boy in New York (both 2017), and ventured into live‑action fairy‑tale adaptations with Disney’s Snow White slated for 2025, while his next thriller Day Drinker remains in production.
