John William Carson (October 23, 1925 – January 23, 2005) was an American television host, comedian, and writer best known as the host of NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962–1992). Carson received six Primetime Emmy Awards, the Television Academy's 1980 Governor's Award, and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 along with a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993. Over his career, Carson became an American cultural icon, applauded for his casual, conversational approach with guests, a technique he enhanced with his lightning-quick wit.

A World War II veteran, Carson served in the United States Navy and then transitioned into a career in radio and television. He took over as the host of the late-night talk show Tonight from Jack Paar in 1962 and continued to be a staple of American culture even after his retirement in 1992. Among his significant contributions to American pop culture, Carson is famously remembered for launching the careers of many performing artists, especially comedians and musicians, who considered being invited to the guest chair a high honor.
