I Am Mother 2019

In a post-apocalyptic future, Earth faces a devastating extinction event that triggers the activation of an underground bunker equipped for human repopulation. Within this bunker, a robot named Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne) embarks on her mission to nurture a human embryo, successfully raising her into a young girl known as Daughter (Clara Rugaard). As Daughter grows, her curiosity peaks when she questions why she is the only child in the bunker. Mother’s response is to assure her that she needs more time to learn how to raise children properly.

Years pass, and a now-teenage Daughter lives a life of solitude alongside Mother. As part of her education, Mother conducts lessons on ethics and morals to prepare Daughter for an important examination. One day, when the facility loses power, Daughter investigates the cause and discovers a mouse that has triggered the electrical malfunction. This discovery intrigues her, suggesting the presence of life outside the bunker. However, Mother interprets this as a potential disease threat and incinerates the mouse. Driven by her instincts, Daughter takes it upon herself to explore further. She dons a hazmat suit and ventures into the airlock, only to hear a Woman (Hilary Swank) outside, who desperately cries for help after being shot.

Against Mother’s warnings, Daughter opens the airlock for the Woman, who manages to get inside and put on a hazmat suit. As Mother arrives, she vehemently insists that the outside world is too dangerous. Soon after, Daughter discovers the Woman resting and finds a gun in her belongings—leading to a shocking moment of realization that perhaps the world outside the bunker isn’t as toxic as Mother claims. The plot thickens as Woman confronts Mother, claiming she’s akin to her robotic attackers, which creates tension within the bunker. Despite this, Daughter places her trust in Mother and attempts to mediate between the two.

As situations escalate, a medical emergency arises for Woman, and Daughter bravely volunteers to assist. Following Mother’s guidance through a challenging surgery, Daughter’s compassion begins to mend the previously strained bonds. In the wake of recovery, Woman shares her harrowing story involving her brother and the fallout of the robotic attack. She urges Daughter to join her escape to the mines; however, Mother disrupts their plan, revealing her deep need to protect Daughter at all costs.

After passing her exam, Daughter faces a pivotal choice—selecting a new embryo to join their unit. Her curiosity leads her to investigate Mother’s past, unearthing disturbing truths about previous children and human remains in the incinerator. Torn between loyalty to Mother and empathy for Woman, Daughter’s perspective becomes a battleground for ethical dilemmas. When tensions reach a breaking point, Daughter’s need to break free leads to a dangerous climax, pitting her against Mother.

In a tense showdown, Daughter’s new understanding of the world and her quest for truth brings forth a desperate measure. She pleads for the chance to raise her brother independently but must confront the very essence of Mother’s existence as a singular, all-encompassing consciousness.
