Richard Alva Cavett, known as Dick Cavett, is an American television personality and former talk show host. Born on November 19, 1936, Cavett made a name for himself regularly appearing on nationally broadcast television in the U.S. from the 1960s through the 2000s. He has notably written an online column for The New York Times and promoted DVDs of his former shows along with a book of his Times columns. Cavett's interviewing skills are held in high regard, with re-runs of his TV interviews with famous individuals like Bette Davis, Woody Allen, and Jimi Hendrix on Turner Classic Movies being particularly popular. According to Cavett, his birth certificate gives Kearney, Nebraska, as his birthplace. Both of his parents worked as teachers, he has Scottish, Irish, English, French, and German ancestry. Cavett stated on his own show that he is a self-described agnostic. Cavett, a Yale University alumni, began his career in the entertainment industry by performing magic shows and later got hired on The Tonight Show, first as a writer and then as a host. His contribution to TV and radio networks is quite expansive, and he also appeared in several films.
