John Lennon, born John Winston Lennon on October 9, 1940, was a widely renowned English singer-songwriter and political activist. Lennon first gained worldwide fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles, regarded as one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of music. Born in Liverpool, he became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager and subsequently formed the Quarrymen, which later evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Lennon was initially the group's de facto leader, gradually ceding this role to McCartney. Indeed, his songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history. Notably, Lennon's creativity and innovation was not limited to songwriting - he also authored books such as 'In His Own Write' and 'A Spaniard in the Works', both collections of nonsense writings and line drawings. His songs, particularly those from his late Beatles and early solo periods, were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the counterculture of the 1960s. He was married twice, first to Cynthia Powell and then to Yoko Ono, he fathered two children; Julian Lennon with Cynthia and Sean Lennon with Yoko. Tragically, Lennon was murdered outside his residence in New York City on December 8, 1980, dramatically cutting short his influential career clearly marked by his eager quests for personal, political, and artistic authenticity.
