John Barry (born 3 November 1933 in York, England, and deceased 30 January 2011) was an English film composer whose music helped shape the modern spy‑movie aesthetic and left an indelible mark on popular culture. Starting his career as a trumpet player and arranger for bands in the 1950s, Barry quickly transitioned to film work, scoring his first feature, The Countess from Hong Kong, in 1967, and would soon become synonymous with the James Bond franchise, providing iconic themes for eight Bond films, including Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and The Man with the Golden Gun. His signature lush orchestration, use of brass fanfares, and emotive melodic lines earned him three Academy Awards for Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa, and The Lion’s Shepherd, as well as six Grammy Awards, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential composers of his generation.
