Guy Hamilton: Movies & Box Office

Mervyn Ian Guy Hamilton (16 September 1922 – 20 April 2016) was an English film director most known for his work on the James Bond franchise. He was born in Paris, the son of Frederick William Guy Hamilton and Winifred Grace Culling, and attended school in England. Hamilton initially started in the film industry working as a clapperboard boy in his youth and was later commissioned in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he focused on his career in film production and gradually rose to the position of a first assistant director. Hamilton was keen in observing both good and bad directors, drawing lessons from their successes and mistakes, which he quoted as being instrumental for his growth as a director.

Hamilton directed 22 films from the 1950s to the 1980s, making his directorial debut with the B-movie The Ringer (1952). His initial works also included adaptations such as An Inspector Calls (1954). His big break came when he directed the Bond movie, Goldfinger (1964). Following its success, Hamilton went on to direct three more Bond films: Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Live and Let Die (1973), and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). In addition to his work on the Bond franchise, Hamilton directed other significant films like Funeral in Berlin (1966), and Battle of Britain (1969). Hamilton declined several offers later in his career, one of these being the initial director for Superman: The Movie (1978), and Batman (1989). He eventually retired in the late '80s after directing Try This One for Size (1989). He famously mentioned in his interviews about his belief in the importance of spectacular and risky stunts over the use of special effects in movies. Hamilton died in 2016 at the age of 93.
