George Chakiris: Movies, Awards & Box Office

George Chakiris was born on September 16, 1932, in Norwood, Ohio, to Greek‑Turkish immigrants Stelianos (Steve) and Zoe Chakiris, one of eight children. After his family relocated to Long Beach, California in 1944, he attended Jefferson Junior High and graduated from Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in 1950. Although he briefly enrolled at Long Beach City College, his passion for dance drove him to drop out and move to Hollywood, where he worked nights studying dance while employed in the advertising department of the May Company. Chakiris made his screen debut at age fifteen in the 1947 chorus of Song of Love and spent the next several years appearing as a dancer or chorus member in musical classics such as The Great Caruso (1951), Stars and Stripes Forever (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) – famously dancing in Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” number – and White Christmas (1954). These early roles often typecast him in ethnic parts, a pattern that would later culminate in his most iconic performance as the tough‑hearted Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, in the 1961 film adaptation of West Side Story.

The West Side Story role earned Chakiris the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, cementing his place in Hollywood history and securing a long‑term contract with the Mirisch Company. He followed the triumph with a series of international projects, starring in Diamond Head (1963), Kings of the Sun (1963), 633 Squadron (1964) and French musical The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967). Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he became a familiar face on television, guest‑starring on series such as Hawaii Five‑O, Wonder Woman, Dallas and Murder, She Wrote. In later years Chakiris turned his creative energy toward jewelry design, founding the George Chakiris Collections line of handmade sterling‑silver pieces, while still making occasional screen appearances, most recently in the 2021 Alzheimer’s‑awareness film Not to Forget.
