Which actor portrays the American serviceman Larry Curado?
Read the complete plot summary of Two and Two Make Six, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
American serviceman Larry Curado George Chakiris is stationed in England when he goes absent without leave. After he accidentally knocks out a sergeant sent to arrest him, he heads on the run with a girl named Julie Matthew Jocelyn Lane. A transport cafe mix-up—caused by two bikes and matching leather gear—causes Julie to end up on the back of the wrong motorcycle, that of Thomas ‘Tom’ Ernest Bennett Alfred Lynch, while Irene Janette Scott takes Larry’s bike. The two couples realize the error within minutes and scramble to set things right.
Back at the cafe, Tom gets mocked at the counter for the mix-up. Larry returns briefly but bolts when he spots a police car, and the two couples split: one head for Sevenhills, the other for Westport.
Tom makes his way to his Aunt Phoebe Tonks Athene Seyler, who runs a college for young ladies in Sevenhills. Aunt Phoebe is kind and perceptive, gently reading the situation and treating Tom and Julie with warmth while she suspects a budding love triangle but chooses to be reassuring and practical about their worries.
Larry and Irene check into a hotel, though they feel exposed and wary about how long they can stay unseen. The barman Ted Harry Locke gives them a tip toward a place that will take two rooms, and the night porter Jack MacGowran is surprised when they request two rooms instead of one.
Julie appears in Tom’s bedroom in her pyjamas, and the two talk in a shy, tender way before she leans in and kisses him, adding a spark to their precarious situation.
Larry tries to organize an illicit escape by sea, but his cash is back in Sevenhills. He returns to Irene’s hotel room and lays out the whole story. Irene, sleeping with a certain grace and politeness, interacts with him while planning their next move. The next day she buys a new dress and sets off to locate Sevenhills Ladies College and Aunt Phoebe, hoping to ground the tale in real-world connections.
Meanwhile, Julie goes clothes shopping, using some of Larry’s money, and later returns to Sevenhills to show Tom a glimpse of herself in a basque. Larry arrives at the college, and a tense confrontation erupts between the couples.
Irene confesses that she loves Larry. She later appears at the US Army HQ as Larry surrenders, claiming to be pregnant by him to soften his potential court-martial—an accusation that is not true.
We fast-forward to a final image of both girls pushing prams, signaling the lasting, quiet changes in their lives after the upheavals of that night.
