Amanda Lemmon is a nine-year-old orphan who finds herself in the sights of the reclusive Butkises, a wealthy family famous for “collecting” children through adoption. She longs for a different future, one with a warm, steady home, and feels a strong pull toward her kind and principled social worker, Diane Barrows. Yet official constraints—Diane’s modest salary, her unmarried status, and the nature of her job—keep them apart, despite Diane’s own wish to provide Amanda with a loving family.
