In 1828, Dr. Thomas Rock Timothy Dalton is a respected anatomist at a leading medical school, deeply devoted to expanding medical knowledge and convinced that the ends justify the means. In a time when the law severely restricts the number of cadavers available to doctors, the institution relies on body snatchers to obtain fresh specimens, a reality that weighs heavily on the lab’s atmosphere of ambition and secrecy. Rock’s work is supported by his ambitious young associate, Dr. Murray Julian Sands, who is tasked with procuring bodies at a high cost, especially those that are newer and more desirable for dissection.
Into this precarious system drift two alcoholic criminals, Fallon Jonathan Pryce and Broom Stephen Rea, whose crimes escalate from theft to murder as they exploit the demand for corpses. As more fresh remains appear at the medical school, Murray grows increasingly uneasy, sensing a pattern he cannot ignore, even as Rock remains steadfast in his justification of their work and dismisses the alarms as distractions from progress. The tension between scientific zeal and moral consequence threads through every encounter, hinting at the dark side of a profession hungry for discovery.
Complicating the station’s perilous balance is the lure of personal life breaking into the grim business. Murray becomes entangled with Jennie Bailey Twiggy, a local prostitute whose beauty and resilience draw him in despite the danger surrounding them. Jennie’s world intersects with the killers’ predatory schemes, and soon her safety—and Murray’s resolve—are put to the test. The danger erupts when Jennie’s friend Alice turns up dead in Rock’s dissection room, a chilling reminder of how the pursuit of knowledge can spill over into violence. Realizing the horror of what is happening, Murray acts decisively to rescue Jennie from Fallon’s murderous reach, exposing the fragile line between progress and peril.
As the net tightens, Fallon and Broom are arrested, but the legal aftermath is morally complicated. Broom agrees to turn state’s evidence against his partner and is released, unrepentant, while Fallon faces execution by hanging. The community’s outrage toward Rock intensifies; he becomes a figure of public controversy, yet he is neither formally punished nor broadly censured by his colleagues, leaving a murky landscape where accountability seems elusive and the boundaries of responsibility blur.
The film closes on a reflective note, with Rock pondering the consequences of his choices and the heavy burden of the knowledge he helped uncover. Overcome by the weight of his actions, he confronts the moral toll of his work and unconsciously echoes the chilling admission that lingers after the carnage: > “oh my God – I knew what I was doing.”
