The youngest of three brothers and one of a set of twins, his early life was marked by tragedy when his mother succumbed to tuberculosis just nine months after their birth, leaving the twins in the care of a devoted nanny. Demonstrating early promise, Raymond earned a scholarship to the Gateway School at eleven, where he remained until sixteen before honing his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
