Flavio Bucci (25 May 1947 – 18 February 2020) was a versatile Italian actor, voice actor and film producer whose career spanned nearly five decades across cinema, television, stage and dubbing. Born in Turin, he made his screen debut in 1971 with the socially charged drama The Working Class Goes to Heaven, quickly establishing himself as a compelling presence in the burgeoning Italian genre film scene of the 1970s. He is perhaps best remembered for his haunting performance as Daniel, the blind pianist, in Dario Argento’s horror classic Suspiria (1977), a role that showcased his ability to convey deep emotion with minimal dialogue. Equally iconic was his portrayal of the brutal thug Blackie in Aldo Lado’s Night Train Murders (1975), cementing his reputation as a versatile character actor capable of both menace and vulnerability. On television, Bucci demonstrated his range in the TV movie Closed Circuit (1978) directed by Giuliano Montaldo, collaborating repeatedly with the director on subsequent projects. His theatrical work included demanding stage adaptations such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Clown, where he also performed recitations of Giacomo Leopardi’s poetry, highlighting his literary sensibility. In addition to acting, Bucci enjoyed a prolific dubbing career during the 1970s and 1980s, providing the Italian voice for John Travolta in his early films and for Sylvester Stallone in The Lords of Flatbush. He also became the familiar Italian voice of television characters Potsie Weber in Happy Days (seasons 1‑2) and Luke Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard (seasons 1‑5). Bucci’s personal life was marked by two marriages: first to actress Micaela Pignatelli, with whom he had two sons, Alessandro and Lorenzo, and later to Dutch producer Loes Kamsteeg, father of a third son, Ruben. His sudden death from a heart attack on 18 February 2020 in Fiumicino, at the age of 72, was mourned by colleagues and fans, and his extensive body of work continues to be celebrated as a testament to his enduring talent.
