During a brief hunt, Fabrizio Sangermano shoots his wife Valeria Piaget Sangermano with a shotgun. There are no eyewitnesses, and the shock of the act reverberates through the family. Maria Teresa Sangermano Testa, Fabrizio’s cousin, remains convinced of his innocence, even as the scandal threatens to swallow them all. The only apparent way to quell the damage is for Marcello Testa, Maria Teresa’s husband and a high-powered lawyer, to lean on the judiciary and bend the inquiry to his convenience.
The investigation is underway. Renato Marinoni begins his formal examination, and the truth begins to surface in the form of flashbacks that shed light on past tensions. The film reveals that Valeria once tried to arrange a liaison between her friend Maria Teresa Sangermano Testa and the alluring, sexually assertive lawyer Cesare Molteni. Yet Maria Teresa declined to sleep with him in Fabrizio’s house at the last moment, highlighting the fragility and pretense that have haunted both marriages.
Two unhappy unions come into sharper focus. Maria Teresa and Fabrizio have long lived with dissatisfaction, each trapped in a marriage that never felt whole. The present tense tightens around Maria Teresa as she confronts a personal crisis: she is married to Marcello Testa, a forty-year-old man whose outward success does little to ease the strain she faces. She has just learned that her husband is preparing to acknowledge a child conceived with Armida, the housekeeper Armida, a revelation that tests loyalties and raises the stakes for everyone involved.
In the center of the family’s life and its protections, the council gathers, with the scene turning around the characters who form its core. Pietro Sangermano and Costanza Sangermano stand as pivotal figures within the clan, and Maria Teresa’s response in this moment of crisis is decisive. For the first time, she speaks with resolve, pushing back against silence and the pressures that have long constrained her.
The tale unfolds with a careful, restrained clarity. The film invites viewers to weigh fault and innocence, to witness the corrosion of trust in a family bound by appearances, and to watch a woman make a deliberate choice to act on her own terms. The intensity arises not from melodrama alone but from the slow, unflinching exposure of hidden motives, long-guarded secrets, and the complex web of relationships that bind the Sangermano family—through the eyes of those who must face the consequences when the truth finally comes to light. The outcome remains uncertain, but the film’s power lies in its patient, unvarnished portrayal of how a single act can ripple through generations.
