Byron Keith (born Cletus Leo Schwitters on November 17, 1917 in El Paso, Illinois) was a versatile American actor whose career spanned the golden age of Hollywood and the rise of television. He began his professional journey in 1946 with a memorable screen debut in Orson Welles’ thriller The Stranger, instantly showcasing a talent for playing authoritative supporting characters. Over the next two decades Keith became a familiar face on both the silver screen and the small screen, appearing in films such as Untamed Mistress (1956), The Great Bank Robbery (1969) and the cult classic Beware! The Blob (1972). His most recognizable role came in the 1960s when he portrayed Gotham City’s mayor, Mayor Linseed, on the iconic television series Batman, a part that cemented his place in pop‑culture memory. In addition to his work in drama, he brought a steady presence to the world of radio under the pseudonym Clete Lee, demonstrating his ability to adapt to different media formats. Television audiences also came to know him as police lieutenant Roy Gilmore in the popular detective series 77 Sunset Strip, where his recurring performance added depth to the show’s ensemble cast.
