Judge Leland Hoffman Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and district attorney Dan Callahan Jack Kelly head out for a weekend hunting trip, hoping for a rare moment of quiet away from city pressures. But the peace is shattered when socialite Paula Thornwall June Blair is found murdered at her luxurious estate. Given the case’s glare from the press and public, Callahan decides to handle the prosecution himself, a choice that doubles as a chance to advance his political ambitions for higher office. The victim’s estranged husband, Walter Thornwall Rhodes Reason, becomes Callahan’s prime suspect, launching a high-stakes legal battle.

The pressure of the Thornwall murder trial begins to reshape Callahan from a congenial, easygoing prosecutor into a relentless advocate who will go to any length to secure a conviction. A pivotal moment comes when a prosecution witness blurts out that Thornwall had once verbally threatened his wife. The defense immediately moves for mistrial, and Callahan objects. After a tense moment, Judge Hoffman orders the testimony stricken, but denies the mistrial. In the end, the jury finds Thornwall guilty, and Callahan seems headed for the governor’s mansion.

But the plot twists when Thornwall’s gardener, Itchy Forst Charles Irwin, is revealed to be the real killer and is arrested on a lesser charge. Seizing on the new development, Callahan holds a press conference to trumpet Thornwall’s acquittal and release. Yet at the state convention, delegates reject the zealous candidate in favor of the quiet, conscience-driven Judge Hoffman, reshaping the race and the public image of both men.
