Gold stolen by outlaws is stashed in the impenetrable bank of Friendly, a small Texas town. Rev. Pious Blue, by Zero Mostel, is a preacher who hides a criminal mind and quietly leads the whole scheme, recruiting the glamorous Lyda Kebanov, [Kim Novak], to serve as the perfect distraction and lure. Their plan is ruthless and carefully timed: tunnel into the vault and detonate TNT to blow it open, using the Fourth of July celebrations as a deafening cover so the noise blends with the marches and fireworks.

Yet the heist is not a solo job. A restless chorus of threats closes in: rival gangs, including a ruthless gunfighter named Slade, [Claude Akins], are also after the loot, adding a unpredictable edge to the getaway. On the law-abiding side, Ranger Ben Quick, [Clint Walker], tracks more than just the money—he seeks proof of a broader corruption involving the town’s banker and Mayor Kincaid, [John Anderson], who is himself inside the vault as the vault’s secrets begin to unravel. The tension thickens as Quick teases out the evidence that could topple the corrupt leadership, exposing a town built on layered deceit.

To buy time, the Reverend’s band unleashes a spectacular distraction. Lyda Kebanov morphs into a living spectacle, posing as Lady Godiva riding a white horse, a shocking display that is meant to keep guards focused on the audacious show while the crew makes their move. The plan hinges on a daring escape by hot-air balloon, a getaway that promises freedom but meets a brutal physical truth: the heavy gold makes liftoff almost impossible. In a moment of shocking pragmatism, Lyda volunteers to abandon the escape ship, torn by her growing feelings for Quick even as the proof he needs edges closer to conviction.

Behind the scenes, the operation is prop-driven by an array of colorful accomplices. The Great Gregory, a balloonist, [Norman Alden], supplies the floating exit. The explosive side of the scheme sits with Brother Dismas Ostracorn, [John Fiedler], and the art-forger Brother Lilac Bailey, [Sam Jaffe], each playing a specific role in keeping the bank’s defenses off-balance. Papa, Juan’s father, [Akim Tamiroff], and the other insiders add layers of motive and risk, while Ranger Commander, [Bill Zuckert], oversees the watchful eyes of the law as the clock ticks toward a fateful culmination.

When Quick finally gathers the evidence to convict Kincaid, the Reverend drifts away with the balloon—seemingly sealing his fate and the loot in one final cinematic pull. The town of Friendly is left to reckon with the tangled lines between faith, ambition, and crime, as the gold slips into history along with a chorus of community figures who never saw the full extent of the scheme until it was almost over. The balance between cunning and courage, spectacle and stealth, keeps the tension alive as the credits begin to roll.
