Jim Drummond, Tim Holt, stands firm against the pressure to sell his land when a scheming duo aims to cash in on the coming railroad. Greeley, [Ernie Adams], a land agent, teams up with Rankin, [LeRoy Mason], a ruthless railroad purchasing agent, to buy up ranches before the rails arrive. When Jim refuses to part with his property, Rankin and Greeley enlist henchmen to manufacture a crime that can ruin him. They stage a deadly trap, framing Jim for the murder of fellow rancher Williams, and have him hauled off by stage to Blue Mesa for a speedy, crooked trial. The escape plan seems foolproof until a brutal assault on the stage—killing the driver and a deputy who escort Jim—changes the course of the scheme. A young gunman named Curly Yantis appears in the chaos, but Jim, posing as Yantis, reaches Blue Mesa to insist that Jim Drummond was killed and that the staged incident was part of a larger plot.

Back on the ranch, Jim’s men Smokey and Whopper observe the upheaval from the shadows and bring the full story back to the party. As the dust settles, Jim explains the conspiracy and solidifies his resolve to take down Rankin and Greeley, even as he fights an undercurrent of personal risk.
