Alan White (1949-2022) was an English drummer best known for his long‑standing tenure with the progressive‑rock band Yes, where his powerful and nuanced playing helped shape the group's sound from the early 1970s until his death. Born in Pelton, County Durham, White grew up surrounded by the vibrant musical culture of northern England, and he began his professional career in the mid‑1960s with the psychedelic group The Gods. His breakthrough came in 1972, when he replaced original Yes drummer Bill Bruford and made his debut on the seminal album Close to the Edge, instantly earning acclaim for his fluid rolls, crisp cymbal work, and uncanny ability to blend rock power with classical precision. Over the next five decades White contributed to more than thirty Yes studio releases, including Fragile, Relayer, 90125 and Magnification, and he also collaborated with artists such as John Lennon, George Harrison, and Joe Cocker, further cementing his reputation as a versatile session musician. Although his health declined in his final years, White continued to perform live, most notably on the 2022 The Royal Affair Tour just weeks before his passing on May 26, 2022.
