We Bare Bears: The Movie 2020

On a stretch of train tracks, Grizzly “Grizz” meets Panda for the first time, a moment charged with childhood wonder and danger. As a fast-approaching train looms, a quick-thinking polar bear cub leaps in to help, and the three soon form a makeshift stack to outrun the danger. They survive the nightmare together, and as the memory fades, a now-adult Grizz drags his brothers Panda and Ice Bear forward into a new plan. They race toward the opening of a Canadian poutine food truck on the San Francisco Bay Area, chasing a sense of belonging and a taste for something new. This impulsive quest setting the stage for something messier than simple hunger: a town’s patience is tested, and the Bears’ presence begins to grate on a city that isn’t sure how to handle them.

In their bid for stardom, the trio stumbles into the glare of fame and the chaos it brings. Envious of the adoration that a celebrity koala named Nom Nom receives from the public, the Bears hatch a plan to record the “ultimate viral video” using dated memes and broadcast it across every screen in the city, hoping to cement their fame. What follows is a cascading blackout that disrupts life as residents know it, turning curiosity into irritation and turning the city against the Bears they once found endearing.

The Bears are summoned to City Hall to explain themselves. Public outcry grows louder, and while some want strict punishment, police officer Murphy hesitates to endorse harsh measures. Wildlife Control Agent Trout steps in and convinces the assembly to detain the Bears and relocate them to a wildlife preserve. The Bears’ friends plead for their release, and the situation spirals when Charlie the Bigfoot and a crew of animal allies hijack a police vehicle and break the Bears out into the forest, leaving them effectively homeless and on the run.

Grizz pushes for Canada as a sanctuary, while Panda hesitates. They disguise the van with hippie graffiti and edge toward the border, narrowly escaping Trout’s checkpoint only to crash their vehicle. They stumble upon the Dramatic Cow, a famous talking cow who invites them to a party with various celebrity animals who mistake them for internet sensations. Although some are wary, the Bears are persuaded to stay the night, and a few of the party-goers fix the battered van. Grizz is haunted by the silent dread of the cubs’ earlier nightmare, and the fear that Trout will catch up to them again.

As they near the Canadian border, the guards deny entry for lacking proper passports, and the van explodes in a blaze of setbacks. Frictions flare within the group, and Panda and Ice Bear are locked in cages to be deported—Panda toward China and Ice Bear toward the Arctic—while Grizz is sent to a wildlife preserve with other captured bears. Grizz’s resolve falters, but his younger self whispers the promise they made when they first met: they would always be “bros for life.” With that memory as fuel, he breaks free, frees the other captured bears, and helps Panda and Ice Bear escape from Trout.

The preserve’s electrified fence lights up with a forest fire, trapping everyone inside. Murphy arrives in a helicopter to pull them to safety, but smoke and flames threaten any quick rescue. The Bears rally the other bears to form a towering stack to reach the helicopter, only to be outmaneuvered by Trout. Frustrated but determined, Murphy shoves a donut into Trout’s mouth, cuffs him to a rail, and lifts the stack to safety. The dramatic rescue is broadcast on the news, and the Bears are celebrated as heroes while Trout is hauled away.

Back in the city, the brothers are warmly welcomed home by friends and neighbors who embrace the new bears among them. The community slowly finds ways to include their non-speaking forest friends in everyday life, turning the once-chaotic spectacle into a shared, enduring bond. The story closes on a note of belonging and resilience: the Bears’ bold misadventures have altered the city’s rhythm for good, and the trio—now permanently part of the urban landscape—continues to navigate fame, friendship, and a home that finally accepts them as they are.
