Solomon Wiener, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Michael Podchlebnik, Jeremy Neumark Jones, are Polish Jews trapped in Occupied Poland who find themselves pulled into the brutal machinery of the Nazi regime. They are forced to dig a trench in the cold Polish wilderness, then marched toward Chełmno, a death camp run by the cruel Lange, David Kross, under the watch of the camp’s harsh hierarchy and the offhand brutality of the guards. False promises of work in Leipzig hang over their heads as the men are stripped of their belongings and pushed into a system designed to erase them.

Inside Chełmno, the prisoners bear witness to a horrifying routine: new arrivals are stripped, loaded into gas vans, and sent to oblivion. The truck returns to the trench, now a makeshift mass grave, and the labor crews are forced to drag the bodies into the trenches while the guards, including Lenz, Michael Epp, shoot any survivors. The cruel reality sinks in when Michael discovers that his wife Klara is among the victims, a blow that leaves him shattered. He pleads with Lenz to end his life, but the commandant refuses, pressing the men back to their grisly work as lime dust coats the corpses.

After repeated transport breakdowns, the Sonderkommandos are compelled to march back to Chełmno. When a Jewish escapee is brought before them, Lenz kills the man and pays the others to look away. Back in the camp, Solomon, Michael, Wolf Kaminski, Charlie MacGechan, and their fellow prisoners begin to craft a dangerous plan. During a drill, Monik, Michael Fox, drops a knife; Lange slits Monik’s throat in a brutal display of power, though Monik spits at Lange first. To humiliate the prisoners further, they are made to dance with a female inmate as shots ricochet toward their feet, the grim moment culminating in an accidental death. Wolf Kaminski slips a pencil to Solomon, urging him to reach Grębów before it’s too late, a poignant spark of hope amid despair.

Back in their bunks, Solomon urges Michael to escape and to carry the truth beyond these walls. He begins to write down the names and hometowns of murdered Jews, a quiet act of defiance meant to preserve memory even as their world narrows to survival. The transport trucks roll in again, and Lenz orders the prisoners onto the vehicles. Goldman and Felix stage a distraction long enough for Solomon and Michael to cut through the canopy and flee into the forest, with Lenz and his men in relentless pursuit. The fugitives slip away by river and shoreline, crossing into a world where every step risks discovery and death; Michael sustains a gunshot wound to the leg, but they press on, avoiding roads and Nazi patrols as they make their way toward safety.

A glimmer of mercy appears at a farmhouse, where a kindly woman offers Railway uniforms and a chance at disguise. The pair steal a Nazi officer’s motorcycle and slip past a Wehrmacht platoon, aided by a field medic who tends Michael’s wound. Moving closer to freedom, they reach the Grębów ghetto, where they seek out Rabbi Schulman, Anton Lesser. Solomon’s warnings about the Nazi death camps finally meet a cautious listener, and Schulman begins to record the testimony on parchment. At first skeptical, the Rabbi comes to believe what he hears and vows to spread the truth, determined to ensure the world cannot forget. In that moment of fragile hope, Schulman promises to amplify their story far beyond the walls of the ghetto, and Solomon speaks through his tears, insisting that the message must live on.
