In the 1990s, in upstate New York, Lucas Brennan, Tom Blyth a young plainclothes police officer, is assigned to an undercover sting operation aimed at gay men in shopping malls. He pretends to participate in public cruising, using subtle looks and gestures to convince men he’s seeking an encounter, and then guides them into restrooms where other officers arrest them for indecent exposure. This routine policing gradually weighs on him, because Lucas is closeted about his own sexuality, a secret that complicates his personal life as he copes with the recent death of his father, Gus, Joseph Emmi Sr., and the tense, changing bonds with his mother and uncle.

During one operation, Lucas is drawn to Andrew Waters, an older man he’s supposed to arrest but ends up letting go. Lucas later uses the alias “Gus” to contact Andrew, and the two begin a secret affair that culminates in an intense encounter at a plant nursery. The relationship pulls Lucas emotionally closer to Andrew, a married pastor with children, who insists their connection must stay brief and hidden. The secrecy becomes unsustainable when Andrew learns Lucas is a police officer and cuts off contact; Lucas then digs through police records to locate him and confronts him at his church, inadvertently exposing the affair to Andrew’s family and effectively outing him. The confrontation fractures the relationship and leaves Lucas increasingly isolated, retreating from others, including his former fiancée Emily, who knows about his queerness.

Months later, at a New Year’s party, Lucas discovers that his mother and uncle have found a letter Andrew wrote to “Gus” describing their relationship and mistakenly believe it was addressed to Lucas’s deceased father. When his uncle reacts with disgust at the idea that Gus could have been gay, a heated argument erupts, escalating into a physical altercation in which Lucas shoves his uncle out a window in front of all the guests. In that same moment, Lucas reveals to his mother that the letter was meant for him, effectively coming out to her and sealing a turning point in his family life.

Throughout, the film balances personal longing with the pressures of concealment, portraying a young man’s struggle to navigate love, loyalty, and identity within a morally complicated landscape. The emotional toll of disclosure echoes through Lucas’s relationships and his sense of belonging, leaving him to face a future where truth and connection must be measured against the risks he has long kept hidden.
