Vera, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, a writer in present-day Spain, is commissioned to write a book about Emilio, Leonardo Sbaraglia, the Argentine photographer who died amid the fighting in Barcelona in 1939. She feels adrift, unable to share a life with her husband and young son, and she suspects she is ill. To uncover Emilio’s story, on a sudden impulse she flies alone to Buenos Aires, where she is hospitalized and undergoes a mastectomy. Dying in the bed beside hers is Matilde, Belén Blanco, an elderly woman who is visited by her divorced grandson Ernesto, Edward Nutkiewicz.

Ernesto helps Vera clear out his grandmother’s house, and it emerges that the young Matilde had worked as a sex worker in the same establishment as Lola, Mercè Llorens, a Spanish chorus girl who later sank into prostitution in a remote town in Patagonia. Ernesto leads Vera to the town, where his father reveals that it was Emilio who, in 1934, bought Lola’s freedom from Suárez, Miguel Ángel Solá, a blind tango composer. When the two boarded an aircraft to leave, Lola could not face the future and threw herself into the sea, dying beside a whale bearing a harpoon wound. When Vera and Ernesto visit the spot, they see the same whale, now very old, marked by the same wound.
