TV journalist Lee Carter witnesses the harrowing assassination of U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Charles Carroll atop Seattle’s famed Space Needle. The initial suspect, a waiter, is swiftly pursued but meets a tragic end amid the ensuing chaos, while the actual perpetrator, masquerading as a waiter, disappears without a trace. An official investigation later claims that a solitary individual acted entirely independently, leaving many questions unanswered.
Fast forward three years, and Carter reconnects with her ex-lover, Joe Frady, a bold investigative reporter residing in Oregon. She shares her haunting fears about the mysterious deaths of six people who had witnessed Carroll’s assassination, expressing her dread that she might be the next target. Unfortunately, her premonitions come to pass when Carter is discovered dead under questionable circumstances, with an assumed drug overdose cited as the cause.
Haunted by the guilt of having brushed aside Carter’s urgent warnings and troubled by the unexplained nature of her death, Frady becomes obsessively determined to unravel the truth behind the chilling events. His inquiry leads him to the quaint town of Salmontail, where he investigates the drowning demise of Judge Arthur Bridges, another eyewitness to Carroll’s murder. The local sheriff, Wicker, offers his assistance in guiding Frady to the dam where Bridges lost his life, only to turn hostile as the floodgates open.
In a gripping fight for survival, Frady engages in a fierce confrontation with the sheriff. Emerging from the struggle, albeit rattled, he seizes the opportunity to explore the sheriff’s residence while alone in the squad car, where he uncovers damaging files linked to the enigmatic Parallax Corporation—a notorious organization infamous for recruiting operatives under the guise of offering “security” services.
Frady’s search soon brings him to local professor Nelson Schwartzkopf, who evaluates a personality test completed by Sheriff Wicker, deeming it a profiling exam meant to identify individuals harboring violent inclinations. As his quest unfolds, Frady meets Austin Tucker, an aide to Carroll and a witness to the senator’s assassination, who shares that he has survived two assassination attempts since the fateful incident.
Just as Frady begins to assemble the pieces of a malevolent puzzle, a bomb detonates on Tucker’s sailboat, taking out both him and his bodyguard. While authorities presume Frady has perished as well, he manages to evade death by swimming to shore and confides in his editor, Bill Rintels, about a bold scheme to use his apparent death as a means to infiltrate Parallax under an assumed identity.
Days later, Frady receives word from a Parallax representative, Jack Younger, indicating his application for training has been approved. Visiting Parallax’s Los Angeles headquarters, Frady undergoes a series of psychologically invasive tests, designed to assess his reactions to a disturbing montage of conflicting images representing both pro- and anti-American sentiments. Upon completing his tests, he tails a Parallax operative to Hollywood Burbank Airport, only to discover a bomb is discreetly placed aboard a passenger flight.
As Frady takes his seat on the plane, he notices a familiar face—the senator contemplating a presidential campaign. Unbeknownst to the senator, Frady is on the lookout for a potentially lethal threat. With utmost caution, he discreetly alerts a flight attendant to the imminent danger posed by the bomb. Just as the plane descends for a landing, it unexpectedly veers back to the runway, triggering a tense evacuation before the aircraft erupts into flames.
Back in his apartment, Frady confronts Younger, who grows suspicious of Frady’s alias. Armed with a well-prepared alibi, Frady successfully deflects Younger’s inquiries. At the newspaper office, Rintels listens intently to a recording of their conversation, unaware that the fates have other plans. That evening, as he enjoys a meal delivered from a local deli, Rintels’ life is shattered by a lethal blend of poison and betrayal. The crucial recordings are lost, taking their vital secrets along with them.
Next, Frady infiltrates the heart of Parallax’s operations in Atlanta, where he is assigned to protect a key operative at a political rally featuring Senator George Hammond. As he hides among the rafters, Frady watches in horror as Hammond unexpectedly falls victim to a sniper’s shot while riding a golf cart.
In a shocking twist, Frady is wrongly implicated as the shooter, making him a target for Parallax’s security team. Realizing he has been set up as a scapegoat, Frady attempts to escape, but his efforts are thwarted with violent repercussions. Ultimately, an official inquiry concludes six months later that Frady acted alone, consumed by misguided patriotism, leaving a web of unanswered questions and unresolved devastation in his wake.
