In 1825, just before the turbulent “Black War,” Irish convict Clare Carroll finds herself in servitude for a colonial army detachment led by Lieutenant Hawkins. When an officer visits to evaluate Hawkins for a potential promotion, Clare, affectionately known as “Nightingale,” entertains the troops with her voice while serving drinks. However, her life takes a dark turn when Hawkins forces her to sing a special song. His unwanted advances culminate in a brutal assault that leaves Clare devastated.
As her husband Aidan senses something is wrong but remains calm, he confronts Hawkins about a promised letter that could secure freedom for their family. Unfortunately, Hawkins remains unmoved, leading to a violent confrontation between Aidan and the soldiers that results in his death and the tragic loss of their infant daughter. This heinous crime ignites a fire within Clare, urging her to seek vengeance for the atrocities inflicted upon her family.
Realizing the official channels offer no solace, Clare decides to take matters into her own hands. She enlists the help of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy. Initially, their relationship is strained, with Clare’s domineering nature clashing with Billy’s quiet strength. However, as they navigate their shared pain and cultural backgrounds, they begin to form a bond that offers each of them a sense of understanding and purpose. Billy reveals that his native name is Mangana, meaning “blackbird” in Palawa kani, and shares his wish to reunite with the surviving members of his tribe.
Meanwhile, Hawkins and his crew continue their heinous ways, recruiting convicts and kidnapping a woman named Lowanna as part of their demented plans. Following a failed rescue attempt by Aboriginal men, Hawkins lashes out violently against those around him. Amid this chaos, Clare and Mangana confront Jago, leading to a violent showdown where Clare avenges her family’s suffering by killing him. Although Mangana considers leaving Clare after this brutal act, he ultimately chooses to stick by her side upon learning the full extent of her tragic journey.
As revenge unfolds, Clare grows increasingly determined. When they stumble upon Charlie, one of the convicts, they realize the journey has taken a perilous turn. After a betrayal and further bloodshed, they encounter a chain gang of Aboriginal men. It becomes a grim reminder of their shared plight, reinforcing their resolve for revenge against those responsible for their suffering.
In Launceston, Clare finally confronts Hawkins, now promoted yet still guilty of his crimes, in front of his fellow officers. In a moment of high tension, Clare and Mangana attempt to escape but find themselves drawn back as Mangana, painted for war, returns to confront his enemies. In a climactic fight, Clare and Mangana execute their plans for vengeance, resulting in further bloodshed but also a sense of resolution as they watch the sunrise, representing both freedom and the haunting reminders of their pasts. As Clare sings a haunting Gaelic folk song alongside Mangana, they embody the resilience of their spirits amid their tragic journeys, seeking solace in the promise of a new dawn.
