The Nightingale’s Prayer 1959

Amna Faten Hamama is a young woman whose life is shadowed by tragedy. She witnesses the death of her elder sister at the hands of their uncle, Jaber Abdelalim Khattab who had abandoned the family and left them with no support. Her mother insists the sister’s fate was deserved because she dishonored the family, but Amna refuses to accept that reasoning.

Driven by a longing for justice, Amna blames the engineer Ahmed Mazhar who swayed her sister and lied to her, causing the death that shattered their world. To seek revenge, she moves into the engineer’s house to work as a maid, quietly plotting from within.

From inside, she launches several attempts to poison him, but each plan fails. She soon learns that killing him may be impossible. As the engineer begins to approach her, she resists him, which only makes him more attracted to her.

Believing that by not resisting anymore and pretending to love him she could destroy his life, she is surprised to find herself drawn to him instead. Her scheme takes a darker turn when she decides to dig a hole and lure him into it. She tries, but the plan backfires and both fall into the trap.

Confronting him with the truth, she reveals who she really is. She decides to walk away, realizing her plans have failed and the household’s reputation may still be at stake. On the street outside the engineer’s house, she spots her uncle with clear malicious intent; the engineer sees the danger too and, in a final act of protection, takes a bullet in his back to save her life.
