Shipwreck strands high-flying tycoon Sir Philip Ashlow Stewart Granger, his neglected wife Lady Susan Ashlow Ava Gardner, and Philip’s loyal friend and pettifogging civil servant Henry Brittingham-Brett David Niven on a sun-washed, deserted island. Cut off from the trappings of their world, the trio faces a raw, almost elemental test of desire, pride, and the uneasy balance of power that comes with isolation. On the sand and beneath a relentless sky, the old rules start to blur.
Philip, determined to keep control even in exile, constructs a large hut for himself and Susan and a smaller one for Henry, a physical reflection of the new order he believes he can enforce. Susan, feeling neglected and oddly drawn to the danger of attention, begins to test the waters, using a careful display of affection toward Henry to provoke jealousy in her husband. Henry, meanwhile, finds his own boundaries shifting as he becomes more willing to push the limits of propriety as a way to seize Susan’s affection. The island becomes a stage for a quiet, escalating rivalry where two men seemingly compete for the same woman, not only over food and water, but over the attention that once belonged to Philip alone.
The tension takes an odd turn when a fourth presence arrives, dressed in native garb and carrying an air of mystery. The newcomer is Mario [Walter Chiari], the yacht’s chef, whose apparent whimsy—along with his unexpected presence—complicates the already fragile geometry of the trio. The laughter circulating from inside Susan’s hut with Mario is misread by both Henry and Philip as a sign of romance, igniting renewed jealousy and misinterpretation. What began as a crackling undercurrent of attraction threatens to spill into something more dangerous when the island’s sheltering calm is pierced by this strange, playful intrusion.
Rescued and returned to civilization, the trio’s fragile dynamic does not simply vanish. Henry visits Susan with a proposal to pursue a future together, but the moment he discovers Susan and Philip sharing a private, domestic peace—Susan knitting baby booties beside Philip in a quiet, ordinary moment—he confronts a stark realization: the struggle for Susan’s love is over, and the balance of power has irreversibly shifted. The island’s earlier chaos gives way to a sobering, unromantic truth about love, loyalty, and what people will fight for when the outside world is far away.
