While oceanographer Steve Zissou is engrossed in filming his latest documentary on the open sea, tragedy strikes when his closest friend and chief diver, Esteban du Plantier, is consumed by a colossal, 10-meter-long creature that Zissou hastily names the “jaguar shark.” Fueled by grief and the urge for vindication, he sets his sights on documenting the destruction of this elusive beast in his upcoming project.

Aboard the aging research vessel Belafonte, Zissou’s colorful crew consists of his estranged wife, Eleanor, who serves as the chief strategist and financial supporter; Pelé dos Santos, a safety expert and Brazilian guitarist renowned for his David Bowie renditions in Portuguese; and Klaus Daimler, the German first mate who has long viewed Zissou and Esteban as paternal figures. The ensemble also features Vikram Ray, the cameraman; Bobby Ogata, the froggy diver; Vladimir Wolodarsky, the physicist and soundtrack composer; Renzo Pietro, the sound technician; and Anne-Marie Sakowitz, the script girl. A recent addition to the crew is a gaggle of unpaid interns from the University of North Alaska. However, this Team Zissou endeavor is facing hardship, with no successful documentary releases in the past nine years.

Enter Ned Plimpton, a fervent admirer of Zissou who believes he is the oceanographer’s son after his mother’s recent demise. After an encounter at the premiere of Zissou’s latest film, Ned leaves his airline piloting job in Kentucky to join the expedition. As Zissou’s producer, Oseary Drakoulias, struggles to secure funding for their new documentary, Ned steps up with his inheritance, much to Eleanor’s dismay as she suspects Zissou is manipulating the situation.

Amidst this chaos, pregnant reporter Jane Winslett-Richardson arrives to document their journey, leading to a love triangle involving both Ned and Zissou, with Klaus growing envious of the attention Zissou bestows on the newcomer.

On their quest to confront the jaguar shark, the Belafonte pilfers tracking devices from a remote station owned by the prestigious oceanographer Alistair Hennessey, who is also Eleanor’s ex-husband and Zissou’s rival. Their voyage takes a dangerous turn when Filipino pirates attack, robbing Ned of his inheritance and kidnapping Bill Ubell, their financial overseer. In a twist of fate, they are rescued by Hennessey and towed to Port-au-Patois, where Sakowitz and nearly all the interns abandon ship.

Motivated to save Bill, Zissou persuades Eleanor to reboard the Belafonte, leading a daring rescue mission. They locate Bill at a deserted hotel on a secluded island, managing to save him and discover that Hennessey is also among the captives. However, tragedy unfolds when Ned and Zissou venture out in a helicopter to find the shark, leading to a crash that leaves Ned fatally injured, ultimately burying him at sea. Prior to his demise, Eleanor discloses to Jane that Zissou is sterile, clarifying that Ned could not be his biological son.

In a moment of raw emotion, Zissou finally locates the jaguar shark in a submersible but chooses not to kill it, appreciating its beauty and realizing he’s out of explosives. Contemplating his connection with the creature, he whispers, >“I wonder if it remembers me.”* Supported by Eleanor, Jane, and the rest of the crew, he finds solace in their presence. At the premiere of the completed documentary—a tribute to Ned, credited as Zissou’s son—Zissou receives a heartfelt standing ovation, reflecting on the journey as the crew joyfully returns to the ship.
