An ineffectual science teacher Will Hay is hired to a school that, after the wartime evacuation, has left its Mid‑England home at St Michael’s and been relocated to the remote Dunbain Castle on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. He adopts a cover as an old Etonian and gradually settles into the castle’s cloistered world, where he begins to get to know the peculiar local atmosphere and the traditions that cling to the place. In particular, he forms a tentative friendship with the other master, Claude Hulbert as Hilary Tisdaile, and together they navigate a curriculum steeped in superstition, superstition that seems to bear on the strange happenings around them.
