Motorist Jane Lindstrom has a tire blowout and seeks help at an estate owned by Caligari, a very polite man with a Swedish accent. After spending the night there, she discovers that Caligari will not permit her to leave; he presses her with personal questions and shows her pictures that offend her sensibilities.
Prevented by guards from departing and unable to use the telephone, Jane Lindstrom searches for allies among the other guests. She identifies three potential companions: the older Paul, the younger Mark Lindstrom, for whom she feels romantic interest, and a lively elderly woman named Ruth. After witnessing Ruth endure torture, Jane Lindstrom turns to Paul, who urges her to challenge Caligari directly.
